An effective curriculum is planned backward from the desired results through a three stage process. Therefore, when designing my lesson, I stop and think; what are the long-term established goals I want my students to walk away with? After I determine that, I establish the essential questions that we will explore and discuss together as a class, so they get an in-depth understanding of the concept. I carefully select my questions, asking only those questions which will stimulate thought, spark more questions, and deepen their understanding of the concept. Of course the key is to enable my students to transfer the material in the future to different settings and situations. Therefore, I examine the material and the established goal I set, if they are beneficial for assisting my students in college and in their future career. If I feel that they can acquire long-term skills and knowledge from this lesson, I know I am headed in the right direction.
